Ghanaian-born American defender Prince Amponsah has secured a new chapter in his professional career after completing a move to Vancouver Whitecaps ahead of the 2026 Major League Soccer season.

The 22-year-old centre-back joins the Canadian club after parting ways with his boyhood side New York City FC, signing a contract that runs until the end of the 2026 season.

Amponsah is set to begin his journey in Canada with Vancouver Whitecaps II, competing in the MLS Next Pro, where he will be aiming to impress and earn promotion to the club’s senior MLS squad.

Prior to his switch, the towering defender enjoyed an impressive campaign with New York City FC II, featuring in 22 matches and showcasing his composure in possession with an outstanding 90 percent pass completion rate—a statistic that underlined his reliability at the back.

Amponsah’s footballing roots trace back to the New York City Academy before he carved out an exceptional collegiate career at Wake Forest University. During his time with the Demon Deacons, he captained the side and collected a host of individual accolades, including 2024 ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player, 2024 Coaches Second-Team All-South Region honours, 2022 ACC All-Tournament Team, and 2022 All-ACC Third-Team recognition.

By the end of his college career, Amponsah had written his name into the Wake Forest record books, finishing seventh in program history for both appearances (92) and starts (84).

He returned to New York last year to sign his first MLS contract with NYCFC but struggled to break into the first team. The move to Vancouver now offers Amponsah a fresh opportunity to restart his MLS ambitions and push for a breakthrough at the highest level.
