FC Lorient have been handed a timely boost as Ghanaian defender Nathaniel Adjei has returned to first-team training after nearly a year on the sidelines with a serious ankle injury.
The 23-year-old centre-back suffered the setback on November 18, 2024, during his senior debut for the Black Stars in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger. Forced off early, Adjei later underwent surgery in December, beginning a long and challenging road to recovery.
Months of rehabilitation and an intensive recovery program kept him out of action, with his absence felt both on and off the pitch. Beyond his defensive qualities, Adjei’s leadership and presence in the dressing room had become an important part of Lorient’s identity.
His return to training last week was met with smiles and applause from his teammates, who warmly welcomed him back to the fold. Head coach Olivier Pantaloni praised the defender’s resilience, describing him as “an example for the group” and expressing optimism about his reintegration into the squad.
Adjei’s comeback comes at a crucial time for Lorient, who are still searching for consistency in Ligue 1 following a difficult start to the campaign. His presence could provide the stability the team has lacked in recent months.
Adjei initially joined Lorient on loan from Swedish side Hammarby in January 2024, impressing in 15 Ligue 1 appearances. His performances convinced the club to secure his permanent transfer in the summer for a reported €7 million.
