The talented guardsman of Ghanaian origin has returned to his mother club after his season-long loan deal with the English third-tier side was abrogated
Irish-born Ghanaian defender James Abankwah is set to spent the rest of the 2023/24 football season with Udinese Calcio after his loan deal with English League One side Charlton Athletic FC was annulled by his Italian employers this winter.
The 20-year-old joined the English third-tier side on a season-long loan deal during the 2023 summer transfer window. However, the terms have now been cut short and the Ghana-prospect defender will now return for the remainder of the season.
"Udinese Calcio announces that it has terminated the loan of James Abankwah to Charlton. The young Irish defender has returned to Friuli and will finish the season in black and white," a statement via Udinese Calcio official club's website read.
Abankwah, who joined the Stadio Friuli campaigners on a four-and-a-half-year deal in 2022, will have his existing contract expired on June 30, 2026.
Born and raised to Ghanaian parents in the city of Dublin, the youngster can switch allegiance and play for Ghana at the international level despite featuring for the Ireland national youth teams.
