Leicester City manager Steve Cooper has confirmed that winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku will miss the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury sustained during Ghana’s AFCON qualifier against Angola.
Fatawu, 20, suffered the injury during the first half of the match and was substituted at halftime. Cooper described the setback as a significant blow for both the player and the club.
“It’s not good; it’s a serious injury,” Cooper said during a press conference. “He’s had an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury that will rule him out for the rest of the season. It’s a big blow, especially for him as a young player facing such a serious issue at this stage in his career.”
Cooper acknowledged that while ACL injuries are relatively common in football, they remain challenging, particularly for younger players.
“Fatawu is an incredible talent and has already shown so much promise at his age. We’ll ensure he receives the best support possible to come back stronger, both as a player and a person,” Cooper added.
Fatawu played a pivotal role in Leicester City’s promotion to the Premier League last season and has continued to impress, registering two assists in 11 league appearances this campaign.
“This is only a pause,” Cooper assured. “With his mentality and character, I have no doubt he’ll return better than ever.”
The injury marks a significant loss for Leicester, as Fatawu had been an integral part of their squad in their first season back in the Premier League.
