Former Ghana international Michael Essien has opened up about his decision to join Danish club FC Nordsjælland as an assistant coach.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid star, who has been with the club for several years, explained that his longstanding relationship with the club’s founder, Tom Vernon, played a pivotal role in his move.
"I’ve known Tom Vernon since I was 17 or 18," Essien shared. "We’ve kept in touch throughout my career, and when I retired from playing, he reached out to me and asked, 'What are you doing now?'"
Essien continued, "I told him, 'I think I’m done playing,' and he suggested I come and see the club. When I visited and saw the whole project, the environment was very welcoming, and I was immediately drawn to it. I loved the focus on developing young players and giving them opportunities to experience professional football."
Essien also emphasized the club's calm and supportive atmosphere, which he described as healthy and conducive for growth. "Everyone is ready to help whenever you need it," he added.
Reflecting on his experience coaching the next generation, Essien admitted, “This generation can be quite difficult,” in a recent BBC interview.
