Former striker of Berekum Chelsea, Stephen Sarfo has urged the Ghanaian government and club owners to pay footballers at least GH₵5000 monthly in order to reduce the surge in player exodus.
The former Black Stars B striker explained that the current wage for footballers was awful, saying, "I will urge the Ghana Government to get involved so that at least a player in the league earns around GH₵5000 which will make him not to leave to join clubs on the continent or move to Europe for greener pastures."
Sarfo, who currently plies his trade for Iraqi club Al Hudoo stated this in an interview with Kessben FM.
The former Ghana Premier League goal king expressed dissatisfaction on how some GPL players underperform when they move to clubs outside Ghana.
“The problem is that our players from the Ghana Premier League do not mature enough before moving to these clubs outside Ghana that is why some underperform.
"It is not only about the players who may need the money but the clubs too. When these clubs are after their players, they also need money by letting them go without maturing enough.
Sarfo went ahead to give his judgment on the difference between the Iraqi Premier Football League (IPFL) and the Ghana Premier League.
“They have good pitches with fantastic facilities and as a player, you will have to think fast on the ball. I will on any day rate the Iraqi league ahead of the Ghana premier league.”
