Samuel Gidi’s journey from Accra’s dusty pitches to European football has taken another decisive step, with the 21-year-old midfielder officially granted Slovak citizenship earlier this month.
The FC Cincinnati recruit has now been named in Slovakia’s U21 squad for their upcoming fixtures against Andorra and Moldova in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification, marking the next chapter in his career.
Slovakia U21 head coach Jaroslav Kentos said the federation had been tracking Gidi for some time, particularly after he began the naturalisation process. “We have been monitoring his progress since he submitted his application, and he now has the opportunity to show what he can bring to this group,” Kentos explained.
Born in Accra, Gidi first honed his craft with La Tse Addo-based Žilina Africa before moving to MŠK Žilina at 18, quickly earning a reputation as a dynamic, all-action midfielder. His recent switch to Major League Soccer with Cincinnati adds another layer to his growing career — and with Slovak nationality now secured, Gidi’s international future lies firmly in Europe.
