Ghana defender Jerome Opoku says he’s hungry to make the cut for the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup squad, with the tournament set to take place across Canada, United States and Mexico next year.

The Istanbul Basaksehir centre-back featured five times during Ghana’s qualifying campaign and has become a key piece of Otto Addo’s defensive puzzle. For Opoku, making it to the World Cup would be a dream come true.

“Hopefully, once that team selection’s there, my name will be on it,” he told RG. “But for now, I don’t want to get too excited. I just want to stay locked in, stay part of the squad, and keep helping Ghana in the build-up to the tournament.”

The 27-year-old has impressed fans and coaches alike with his calmness on the ball, physical strength, and tactical awareness. He also netted his first international goal against Uganda earlier this year and was ever-present during Ghana’s qualification run.

“The World Cup is the biggest tournament in the world that you can be part of,” he added. “This team is coming together really well, and once we fully adapt to the coach’s ideas, I believe we have the quality to make history. If I’m there, which I pray I will be, the sky’s the limit.”

Ghana sealed their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Comoros, marking the nation’s fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.
