The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager has blamed his side's wastefulness in front of goal for their 1-0 shocking defeat to Comoros in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday evening.

Ghana coach Chris Hughton has expressed his disappointment at the quality of the Black Stars' finishing, insisting his team outplayed Comoros in the entire duration of the match at the OmniSports Stadium.

A 43rd minute strike from Hertha BSC striker Myziane Maolida was enough to maintain the Coelacanths' winning streak in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and sit on top of Group I with six points.

“Congratulations to Comoros for the victory. In my opinion over the 90 minutes, we were the better team. I thought Ghana we were the better team. We conceded what we regarded as a poor goal to concede and we were not able to capitalise on the chances that we had,” Hughton said after the game.

“So this was not a game where Comoros won this game comfortably. Over the 90 minutes, we were the better team but unfortunately, we were not able to put away the chances that we created,”

Hughton is currently under pressure from Ghanaians, calling for an immediate dismissal from his role as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Ivory Coast from January to February 2024.

They believe the team has been underperforming the Irish-born Ghanaian coach after picking only one victory in his last four games. Losing to Mexico and USA in the October's international friendlies and Tuesday's defeat to Comoros in the World Cup qualifiers.

Hughton was appointed as Ghana coach in March 2023 as replacement for Otto Addo in a deal that runs until December 2024.

He was the technical advisor of the team before he was handed the top role when Otto Addo left the job after Ghana's group stage exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
