Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has called on the 2026 World Cup host nations to ease strict entry requirements to ensure ordinary fans are not denied the chance to attend the tournament.

The World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, begins on June 11 under an expanded 48-team format. But Adams fears the intensity of current visa procedures could prevent many supporters from travelling to witness the global showpiece.

He pointed out that many ordinary fans could struggle with demands like showing property documents, proof of marriage or dependants, or providing strong financial evidence.

“I may be a sports fan and may not have any tie to anybody [no marriage, no kids], does that mean I shouldn’t go and watch the World Cup?” Adams questioned.

He urged authorities in the host nations to make reasonable exemptions in the spirit of inclusivity and global participation.

“America believes in recreation and the rights of persons, so you cannot continue to put so many restrictions on people who want to go and watch the World Cup. Certain things must be relaxed because of the World Cup,” the Buem MP added.

Ghana will open their Group L campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23, and round off against Croatia on June 27.
