Former Ghana international Sammy Kuffour has voiced his disapproval over the handling of the Black Stars captaincy, urging for more consistency in leadership decisions.
The issue has been a long-standing one in the national team, with the latest development seeing Jordan Ayew named captain despite Thomas Partey initially being considered. Previously, Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku were also linked to the role, while Andre Ayew, the substantive captain, has not officially retired.
Kuffour pointed to the controversial decision in 2019 when Asamoah Gyan was stripped of the captaincy ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, with Andre Ayew taking over. He believes such abrupt changes only create unnecessary tension within the squad.
“We make [Black Stars captaincy] too complicated. It wasn’t the right decision to take the armband from Asamoah Gyan. As part of the NC committee, I said, ‘Let Gyan remain captain since he had only a few months left.’ We didn’t need to create tension for Dede or make Gyan feel isolated. A coach has to choose the [Black Stars] captain, and not the FA,” Kuffour told Sporty FM.
Despite the debate, Jordan Ayew has made a strong start as captain, leading Ghana to back-to-back victories against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, registering one goal and four assists.
