Former Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has delivered a sharp critique of the national team following their narrow 2-1 win over Ghana’s Black Stars, insisting the performance fell far below Germany’s traditional standards in midfield control and game management.
A late strike from Deniz Undav ensured the four-time world champions edged past Ghana to complete back-to-back wins during the March international break. However, the performance has drawn heavy criticism despite the result.
Kroos did not hold back in his assessment, arguing that Germany were fortunate to come away with a victory after being second best in key phases of the match.
“Germany used to be known for its midfield. It’s a disgrace to see Ghana outplay us there. We looked average today—it was just a lucky win. You can’t win the World Cup playing like this,” he said.
The former midfield maestro also questioned Germany’s tactical setup, insisting that Joshua Kimmich should be reinstated in midfield to restore balance and control.
“You can’t win the World Cup playing like this. Joshua Kimmich should be playing in midfield. We also wasted too many chances. I expected more from the team,” Kroos added.
Despite the criticism, Germany continue their preparations for the World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group E alongside Ivory Coast, Curaçao, and Ecuador, as scrutiny grows over their consistency and midfield identity heading into the tournament.
