Ghana football legend George Alhassan has expressed disappointment in the assistant coaches of the Black Stars, accusing them of not providing adequate support to head coach Otto Addo.
His remarks follow Ghana's failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in two decades.
The Black Stars endured a dismal qualifying campaign, finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points from three draws and three defeats, marking one of the team’s worst performances in recent history.
Alhassan, a 1982 AFCON winner, believes the assistant coaches failed in their roles, which contributed to the team’s poor showing. Speaking to Citi Sports, he said:
“They should have done better because I don’t see that they are helping the coach himself. I don’t see anything that shows that they are helping the coach"
He further suggested a lack of collaboration within the technical team, saying, “If you are a coach and you have a technical team, you must work together. Or maybe they are afraid to suggest ideas to the coach. Perhaps everything is left to the coach, so they also sit back and watch him. If they worked together, I don’t think things like this would have happened.”
The current Black Stars technical team includes John Paintsil as the first assistant coach, Joseph Laumann as the second assistant coach, and Fatawu Dauda as the goalkeeper's trainer.
Despite the team’s failure to secure AFCON qualification, reports indicate that Otto Addo may be retained as head coach. However, changes are expected within the backroom staff as the Ghana Football Association reviews the technical setup ahead of future assignments.
