Germany forward Nick Woltemade has admitted that their international friendly against Ghana’s Black Stars was far from comfortable, describing the encounter as “unpleasant,” despite the former world champions edging a 2-1 victory.

The Newcastle United striker was handed a starting role for Germany before being substituted for Leroy Sané, who later provided the assist for Deniz Undav’s late winner that sealed the result.

Although Germany came out on top, Woltemade was critical of his side’s performance, acknowledging that Ghana’s intensity and discipline disrupted their rhythm, particularly in the first half.

“The first 25 minutes were very good; we just lacked a goal. Then things got a bit chaotic because we became somewhat impatient,” Woltemade said.

“In the second half, we were dominant. Ghana only really threatened on the counter-attack. We conceded a few too many chances.

“It was an unpleasant game. The win makes the journey home much smoother. We can take a lot away from this match.”

The match saw Germany take the lead just before half-time when Arsenal forward Kai Havertz converted from the penalty spot. Ghana responded strongly after the break, with Abdul Fatawu Issahaku restoring parity to set up a tense finish.

However, with just two minutes remaining, Deniz Undav struck the decisive goal to hand Germany a hard-fought victory over the Black Stars.

Ghana will now turn their attention to upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
