Antoine Semenyo has revealed that choosing to represent Ghana national football team over England national football team was a straightforward decision, shaped by both opportunity and deep family pride.
Speaking on the AllOutFootball Podcast, the Manchester City forward admitted he was never seriously in contention for England, making Ghana’s approach in 2021 an easy path to take.
“I was never really in the England rankings like that anyway. Ghana came in 2021, and I couldn’t turn down the chance to play senior football for them,” he explained.
The 26-year-old has since grown into a key figure for Ghana, making his debut at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and now positioning himself for another appearance at the 2026 global showpiece.
Beyond football, Semenyo emphasized the emotional weight behind his decision, highlighting the overwhelming joy it brought to his family.
“My dad was so happy… everyone in my family supports Ghana. It meant everything to them,” he added.
Now enjoying an impressive run of form at club level, Semenyo is expected to play a crucial role for Ghana at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars face a tough Group L challenge against England, Croatia, and Panama.
