Dutch-born defender Derrick Luckassen has made his first appearance for Ghana, coming off the bench in a 2-1 friendly defeat by Germany in Stuttgart.
The 30-year-old centre-back was introduced in the 56th minute after Kojo Oppong Peprah went off injured. Luckassen had been an unused substitute in Ghana’s heavy loss to Austria a few days earlier.
Having recently switched his international allegiance, he was given his first chance by coach Otto Addo as the Black Stars continue their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
Luckassen played the final 34 minutes of the match and made a steady contribution in defence. He recorded two clearances and was involved in several duels during his time on the pitch.
His call-up is seen as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s back line ahead of the tournament in North America, where they are set to face Panama, Croatia and England in the group stage.
Despite an improved display against Germany compared to the 5-1 defeat by Austria, Ghana’s latest result means they are now without a win in four matches.
The run has raised fresh concerns about the team’s consistency as they build towards the World Cup.
Luckassen will now hope his first game was good enough to earn a spot in the next Black Stars coach’s final squad, after Otto Addo was removed from his role following the defeat to Germany on Monday night.
