Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Fred Pappoe has called on Ghanaians to fully support newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz as the team builds towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced Portuguese tactician has been handed a short-term contract to lead Ghana at the global tournament this summer, replacing Otto Addo following his departure after a difficult run of results, including defeats to Austria and Germany in the March international window.

Addo’s second stint ended after further disappointment, including Ghana’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, despite continued backing from the football authorities.

Speaking to Adom FM, Pappoe stressed that unity and collective backing will be crucial for the Black Stars as preparations intensify.

“We have limited time for the World Cup, and if you look into the list available and you check our pocket, I believe we have to rally behind whoever has been appointed,” he said.

He noted that Queiroz’s vast experience, including four World Cup appearances, should be seen as an asset rather than a point of criticism.

“We were all clamouring for a respected coach, and someone who can transform the team… has come out with their choice, and we have to support him,” Pappoe added.

“He has been at the World Cup four times, and we don’t have to focus on the negatives, but rather support him.”

Queiroz is expected to meet the Black Stars squad next month during friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as part of final preparations for the tournament.

Ghana, heading into its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
