Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has revealed that former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo did not meet expectations during his second stint in charge of the national team, despite sustained support from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024, was relieved of his duties following consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international break. His departure also comes in the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, even though he previously guided the team to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on the KSM Show, Kofi Adams explained that the GFA showed patience with the technical team but eventually saw little improvement in performances on the pitch.
“They kept the coach and carried him along. They were expecting to see some improvement and changes, but not much has been seen,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has confirmed the appointment of Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal to lead the Black Stars into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately, focusing on squad assessment, technical restructuring, and tactical preparation ahead of the tournament.
The former Real Madrid and Iran national team coach will first assess the squad during next month’s international friendly against Mexico, before Ghana concludes its build-up with a fixture against Wales on June 2.
Ghana, set for its fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
