Former Ghana striker Prince Tagoe has revealed that the Black Stars squad received a $10,000 winning bonus during their memorable 2010 FIFA World Cup run in South Africa.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Tagoe said the bonus acted as extra motivation for the team, which was sometimes criticised for its cautious style under then-coach Milovan Rajevac.
"At the end of the day, we were winning and taking our bonuses. The winning bonus was $10,000 at the time," he said.
Ghana advanced from a group that included Serbia, Australia and Germany, recording one win and a draw to reach the knockout stage. The Black Stars then beat the USA 2-1 after extra time in the Round of 16 before their campaign ended in a dramatic quarter-final penalty shootout loss to Uruguay.
Tagoe described the 2010 World Cup performance as one of Ghana’s most memorable campaigns on the global stage.
The Black Stars are now preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance at the 2026 tournament in North America.
