Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has added his voice to calls for the inclusion of home-based players in the Black Stars.
He believes that local players have the talent and potential to compete with their foreign-based counterparts if given the necessary confidence to showcase their abilities.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Select Committee reviewing the petition by the Save Ghana Football Demonstrators, Appiah emphasized the importance of supporting local players. "We have to give the local players the chance and the confidence to play for the national team," Appiah stated.
He reflected on his own time with the national team, explaining how local players were key in pushing the team forward. "In our time, there were certain players who looked like key figures, but there were others, like William Tiero, who kept us on our toes," he added.
Appiah’s comments echo those made by former international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, who also advocated for more opportunities for local players in the Black Stars squad.
The Black Stars are currently struggling in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with a 1-0 loss to Angola in Kumasi and a 1-1 draw against Niger in Morocco.
Angola tops Group F with 6 points, followed by Sudan with 3, while Ghana and Niger trail with 1 point each.
