FIFA Talent Coach Stuart McLaren has applauded the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for its continued investment in women’s football, describing the country’s youth tournaments as a crucial foundation for building the next generation of stars.

During an observation tour of one of Ghana’s national youth competitions, McLaren was full of admiration for the talent, energy, and enthusiasm displayed by the young players.

“I’m hugely impressed. The talent that’s on show has been absolutely fantastic,” McLaren said. “What’s equally important is seeing so many young girls playing with joy, competitive spirit, and supporting one another.”

The Scottish coach, who has been working closely with the GFA’s Technical Directorate, said the tournaments offer an “invaluable” opportunity to identify players capable of progressing to the senior national level.

“I’ve seen quality in every area,  confident goalkeepers, composed defenders, creative midfielders, and clinical forwards. The strength across the pitch is impressive,” he noted.

McLaren, however, stressed that Ghana’s progress must be matched with a drive for continuous improvement.

“No matter how good we are, there’s always room to grow. Technical ability is important, but so are passion, character, and resilience. Those traits are what make top players,” he explained.

He also urged all football stakeholders, from coaches to communities, to keep supporting the development of young girls in the sport.

“Everyone has a role to play in creating more pathways for girls to play and compete. These tournaments give them the platform to test themselves, learn, and improve,” McLaren added.

Ending on a hopeful note, McLaren said Ghana’s women’s football is heading in the right direction.

“If this momentum continues, the future of women’s football in Ghana looks absolutely fantastic,” he said. “We just need to keep nurturing these players and providing the right environment for them to thrive.”
