Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has opened up about the breakdown of his once-close relationship with former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi, attributing it to external interference and political scheming.

In an interview with Metro TV, Afriyie stated that his decision to contest the GFA presidency created tensions between them, which were exacerbated by individuals seeking to exploit the situation.

“One person told Nyantakyi that I had visited a juju man to ensure my appointment as Vice President and claimed that he would die within a year of my appointment,” Afriyie disclosed, describing the accusations as baseless and malicious.

Afriyie also addressed the fallout following his removal as Vice President in 2017. Speaking on Asempa FM, he revealed that the decision was made during a meeting at the Youth and Sports Minister’s office, from which he was excluded. He was accused of being affiliated with the NDC and sabotaging the GFA.

“They held a meeting in the Youth and Sports Minister’s office without me, even though I was chairman of the Black Stars management team. I was told someone I defended was accusing me of sabotage,” he explained.

Afriyie further clarified the controversial text message he sent after his removal, stating it was addressed to Nyantakyi’s close associates, Sannie Daara and Nana Kwame Nketiah, to express his feelings of betrayal.

The former Vice President's revelations shed light on the internal divisions and power struggles that have shaped Ghana football's leadership in recent years.
