Former GFA Vice President, George Afriyie has shared his thoughts on Ghana’s chances at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup which is less than four months from now, stressing the importance of a strong start in the tournament.

George, who also contested the presidency of the Ghana Football Association on two occasions, believes Ghana must secure victory in their opening match to enhance their chances of progressing from the group stage having missed out in their last two appearances at the Mundial (2014 & 2022).

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside 1966 champions England, 2018 finalists Croatia, and Panama, with the four-time African conquerors side set to begin their campaign against Panama.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, George Afriyie says winning the opening game against Panama could give Ghana the early momentum needed to secure valuable points against the other strong opponents in the group.

“First of all, we need to win against Panama to position ourselves to either win or pick a point against England or beat Croatia or pick a point.

“Whichever way, it can propel us if we are to make a mark and go beyond the group stage.”

“I expect us to beat Panama. The first match is very important and, among our group opponents, trust me, our best bet is against Panama.”

“We all know England and Croatia are ahead of us in terms of FIFA rankings, but national team football is quite tricky,” he added.

Coach Otto Addo and his men will regroup very soon to start preparations towards the world showpiece with two friendlies against Austria and Germany set for this March international window. They will subsequently play Mexico and Wales to wrap up their preparations.
