Frederick Acheampong, an Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has refuted reports suggesting Otto Addo is the leading candidate for the vacant Black Stars coaching position.
Contrary to earlier media speculations, Acheampong clarified that the decision to appoint the next Black Stars coach rests with the Executive Council, not solely with the search committee.
The GFA established a committee, chaired by Vice President Mark Addo, to identify and recommend potential candidates for the coaching role. However, Acheampong emphasized that the final decision lies with the Executive Council.
Acheampong highlighted the rigorous selection process, whereby the search committee shortlists three coaches for further evaluation and scrutiny by the Executive Council.
“The appointment of the coach does not even stop with the search committee. This is from our level (The Executive Committee). The decision we made was that the search committee should draw up a shortlist of three coaches, so I was surprise to hear that Otto Addo is leading the race as if the search committee are in charge to appoint us a coach”
Regarding Otto Addo's candidacy, Acheampong acknowledged Addo's previous stint with the Black Stars, during which he guided the team to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, he underscored the need for thorough deliberation before confirming any appointment.
“The search committee are expected to bring three coaches to the Executive Council for further discussions and checks before one person will be chosen amongst the three” he said on Kessben FM
Addo, currently part of Borussia Dortmund's coaching staff, had previously managed the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign. Despite initial success in qualifying for the tournament, Ghana's early exit prompted a change in coaching staff, leading to Chris Hughton's appointment.
