The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has explained why experienced coach Carlos Queiroz has been chosen as the new head coach of the Ghana national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The 72-year-old Portuguese tactician has been appointed on a short-term deal, replacing Otto Addo after a run of inconsistent results in the build-up to the tournament, despite Ghana securing qualification for the global showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Several names, including Pitso Mosimane, Kwesi Appiah and Paulo Bento, were reportedly considered for the position. However, the GFA has settled on Queiroz to lead the Black Stars into the mundial.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the decision was based on the coach’s deep understanding of the team and his detailed preparation plan.

Speaking to Asempa FM, he said: “Carlos Queiroz provided a detailed analysis of his observations of the Black Stars, from their AFCON qualification failure to World Cup qualification,” he explained.

“He showed strong knowledge of the team’s player profiles and outlined how he intends to guide the Black Stars’ progress from the group stage at the World Cup,” Asante Twum added.

Queiroz is expected to meet the Black Stars squad next month during an international friendly against Mexico, before Ghana wrap up their preparations with a final warm-up game against Wales on June 2.
