Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Fred Pappoe has endorsed the decision to dismiss Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, describing the move as necessary ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The GFA officially parted ways with Addo on March 31 following a difficult international break, where Ghana suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria and a 2-1 loss to Germany, extending a worrying run of four straight defeats.

The poor results came shortly after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—their first absence in the competition in 20 years.

According to Pappoe, the decision to relieve Addo of his duties was justified based on the team’s declining performances and lack of direction.

“We’ve all been seeing the performance of the team, and I’m sure they looked at the recent performances and the way things are going, and I want to believe they took a good decision,” he told Joy Sports.

While supporting the decision, Pappoe stressed the urgency of appointing a new coach quickly to stabilise preparations for the World Cup.

“The important thing is that they must quickly try to get a replacement to settle in and make sure the team gets ready for the World Cup,” he added.

GFA President Kurt Okraku has assured that a new head coach will be announced within 14 days as Ghana intensifies preparations for upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May.
