Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has pledged strong support for sports.
According to the deputy head of state, sports plays a key role in national development.
She made this known during a working visit to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, where she was welcomed by Sports Minister Kofi Adams, Chief Director Wilhelmina Asamoah, GFA President Kurt Okraku, and Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority Gideon Hammond.
During the visit, the Vice President was briefed on ongoing projects aimed at developing sports in the country. These included the clearance of nearly $1 million in overdue salaries owed to players of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.

Impressed with the update, Professor Opoku-Agyemang praised the Ministry’s efforts.
“This Ministry is playing its role, and I am very impressed with the report you have given. I want to congratulate all of you,” she said.
Ghana has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams also highlighted steps being taken to strengthen the sector, including plans to push for the passage of the Sports Fund and the creation of a Sports Police Unit.
Meanwhile, Chief Director Wilhelmina Asamoah thanked the Vice President for the visit and assured her that the Ministry would continue working towards meaningful and lasting change in Ghanaian sports.
