Former Vice-President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has advised the current administration to maintain their trust in head coach Otto Addo despite the Black Stars' ongoing difficulties in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Black Stars have endured a four-game winless streak under Addo, putting their chances of qualifying for the AFCON in jeopardy. Ghana, currently third in Group F, has only managed two points from a possible twelve and is on the brink of missing the tournament for the first time since 2004.
However, Afriyie believes sacking Addo is not the solution. "I am not one of those who will say we have to sack Otto. We have to keep faith with him and ensure he continues the process he has started because, remember, we still have the World Cup qualifiers," he remarked.
Afriyie emphasized the importance of supporting the coach through this challenging period. "We need to give him the necessary backing. As far as the AFCON qualifiers go, let's accept that we're likely out and allow Otto to make his decisions, learn on the job, and then move forward."
For Ghana to stand any chance of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON, they must win their final two matches in November against Angola and Niger. In addition, Sudan, who are second in the group with seven points, must falter in their remaining fixtures.
Angola has already secured qualification with 12 points, while Niger remains at the bottom of the group with only one point.
