Ghana Football Association Spokesperson, Henry Asante Twum, has gone into details as to why invitation to the four-nation tournament was accepted and their ultimate purpose heading in.
The Black Stars were in camp just last month and recorded two wins against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers to redeem themselves very well from their embarrassing winless campaign in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
The four-time African champions thanks to Afro Sports will get to compete against Trinidad and Tobago, the Reggae Boys of Jamaica and West-African neighbours Nigeria later next month and will definitely be a perfect test for the team as they will have no games to play in June.
Speaking in an interview, the renowned journalist said they accepted the invitation because they believe it's a perfect platform to enhance the Black Stars rebuilding process and wouldn't be match concerned about the outcomes.
However, he admitted playing against eternal rivals Nigeria is always on a different level as the football fans will definitely need that win to claim the bragging rights hence will put in efforts to win that particular game.
“We received this proposal [Unity Cup] from Afro Sports [UK-based match agency] and then we expressed interest in it,” Twum said.
“We are not overly concerned about results. We are concerned about our team-building agenda.”
“We are very much also aware that, you know, matches between Nigeria and Ghana are always difficult.”
The competition will be played in a knockout fashion with the winners of the first round advancing to face each other in the final.
Ghana will play the Super Eagles in the second semi-final on Wednesday, May 28, at the Gtech Stadium - home venue of Premier League side Brentford.
