Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Fred Pappoe has come to the defence of Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, urging critics to give the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper the credit he deserves for his consistent performances in Ghana’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
Asare, who has kept five clean sheets in five matches, has faced public scrutiny despite his impressive form between the posts. Some fans have questioned his credentials and long-term suitability as Ghana’s No. 1, but Pappoe believes such criticism is misplaced.
“I don’t know why people are making an issue of it,” Pappoe said in an interview with Citi Sports. “The man has been given a job to do — and he, Benjamin Asare, is doing the job. So what is our point?”
He further highlighted that Asare has excelled in his main duty as a goalkeeper — preventing goals.
“We put him in the post to make sure we don’t have balls entering our net… and he’s doing just that. It’s not a call we should be making now,” he stressed.
Pappoe’s remarks come as Ghana prepare for their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Comoros on Sunday. The Black Stars, who need just a point to secure qualification, are expected to start Asare once again as he looks to extend his flawless run in the campaign.
