Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has showered praise on Benjamin Asare, whose rapid rise through the ranks has seen him become Ghana’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, ahead of several of the country’s more established names.

Asare, the Hearts of Oak captain, made his senior debut for Ghana in March 2025 during the World Cup qualifier against Chad, and has since been a revelation between the posts. His consistency and composure have earned him admiration from both fans and the national team’s technical staff.

The 33-year-old has been in outstanding form, keeping five clean sheets in six matches for the Black Stars — conceding only once during the entire World Cup qualifying campaign. Domestically, he remains unbeaten in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season, further cementing his reputation as one of the nation’s most reliable shot-stoppers.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3Sports, coach Otto Addo was full of admiration for Asare’s skill and mentality.

“He’s really good. I think his strength is definitely on the line — short blocking and reaction saves. There’s still room to improve, but I think he’s growing from game to game,” Addo said.

Asare’s emergence marks a turning point for Ghana’s goalkeeping department, which has struggled for stability in recent years. While the Black Stars have often relied on goalkeepers based in Europe, Asare’s performances have shown that local-based talents can excel at the highest level when given the opportunity.

Addo revealed that a standout training session sealed the Hearts of Oak skipper’s place in the national setup.

“It was a close decision. The turning point was the last training when we invited him. He really trained well. He had this self-confidence, was organizing, pushing the players — doing everything to win that training match. This really convinced us,” he disclosed.

With Ghana set to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Asare is expected to play a key role in Addo’s squad. His leadership, resilience, and calm presence have not only secured his place in goal but also restored belief in a position that had long been considered a weakness for the national team.

Benjamin Asare’s journey — from local league standout to Ghana’s No. 1 — stands as one of the most inspiring success stories in recent Black Stars history, a testament to hard work, discipline, and the value of believing in homegrown talent.
