Former Black Satellites goalkeeper Daniel Agyei has expressed deep regret over turning down a $1 million contract offer shortly after helping Ghana secure the 2009 U-20 World Cup.
Agyei was the hero of the final against Brazil, making two crucial penalty saves to seal Ghana’s historic victory. His stellar performances earned him a lucrative offer and the chance to play in Europe.
However, Agyei opted to stay with Liberty Professionals, a decision heavily influenced by his mentor, Sly Tetteh, the late founder of the club.
“I regret not accepting a $1 million contract after winning the U-20 World Cup. My godfather, Sly Tetteh, advised me to stay,” Agyei revealed in an interview with GHOne TV.
Following the missed opportunity, Agyei had short spells with Medeama SC, Simba SC, and, most recently, Dutch side OFC Oostzaan Zondag in 2023.
Despite this, Agyei achieved notable milestones in his career. He debuted for the senior Black Stars on November 18, 2009, in a friendly against Angola and was part of the squad that won silver at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. He also featured in Ghana’s historic 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa.
While proud of his contributions to Ghanaian football, Agyei admits that turning down the European opportunity remains a decision he wishes he could revisit.
