Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, has underscored the need for a strategic approach in appointing the next coach for the Black Stars, advocating for contracts of a minimum of three years to facilitate team development.
Following the departure of Chris Hughton after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to the team's underwhelming performance, the senior national team is currently in search of a permanent head coach.
Hughton's tenure began on a disappointing note at the tournament, with a loss against Cape Verde and draws against Egypt and Mozambique.
In response to the coaching vacancy, a five-member committee was tasked with recommending a suitable candidate to the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). Although the committee has completed its report, the official announcement is pending.
Speaking in an interview, Minister Ussif stressed the importance of stability in coaching appointments for the team's advancement. He highlighted that short-term contracts impede the team's progress and called for long-term commitments to foster growth.
"I have proposed that the next Black Stars coach must be given a three-year deal or more," Minister Ussif stated during an interview with Asempa FM, underlining the necessity for a shift in approach to propel the team forward.
Meanwhile, various media reports suggest that Otto Addo is the frontrunner to be reappointed as the Black Stars coach.
