Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has outlined an ambitious objective for Ghana’s senior national team, declaring that the Black Stars are aiming to reach the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will mark Ghana’s fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking to Citi Sports, the Buem Member of Parliament emphasized that qualification alone is not the ultimate goal, insisting the team must prepare with the mindset of competing until the final match of the competition.
“Our intention is to stay there until the last game, so preparation must reflect that ambition,” Adams said, stressing the need for long-term planning once World Cup qualification is secured.
He added that despite concerns raised by some observers about the scale of preparations, the national team is approaching the tournament with confidence and belief that they can compete at the highest level.
Ghana have been placed in Group L of the FIFA World Cup, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia during the group stage.
The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England six days later. Their final group fixture is scheduled for June 27 against Croatia.
After suffering group-stage eliminations at the 2014 tournament in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar, Ghana are eager to make a deeper run this time around.
As part of preparations, the team will regroup in March for international friendly matches against Austria and Germany, followed by a final warm-up fixture against Mexico in May.
The Ghana Football Association has also confirmed that the Black Stars will set up their training base at Bryant University in the United States throughout the competition, providing a stable environment as they chase a historic World Cup campaign.
