Kojo Addae-Mensah, CEO of Databank Ghana, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to impose rigorous sanctions on clubs that fail to comply with the newly introduced Standard Player Contract, set to take effect in the 2025/26 season.
The contract framework, rolled out by the GFA’s Executive Council, is designed to improve player welfare and introduce minimum standards for player agreements across the Ghanaian football system.
Speaking to Kumasi-based LUV FM, Addae-Mensah criticised the leniency of current disciplinary measures and called for more severe consequences, including league suspensions, for offending clubs.
“It’s not punitive enough,” he said. “If you breach this, because this is the player's welfare… you must be suspended from the league.”
Drawing comparisons with international football governance, he referenced European cases where clubs faced relegation for regulatory breaches.
“In Europe, clubs have been relegated for breaches like this,” he stated. “Juventus flouted something and were relegated. You know, so, we have to put in proper punitive measures, but if you do slap on the wrist punitive measures there, it won't take us anywhere.”
The GFA’s Standard Player Contract is part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing professionalism, reducing disputes, and safeguarding players' rights within the domestic game.
