Former Ghana Football Association vice-president Fred Pappoe has called on Ghanaians to unite behind new Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz as the team prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese coach has been given a short-term deal to lead Ghana into the global tournament later this year. He replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed after consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international break.

Addo, who returned to the role in March 2024, struggled during his second spell. Ghana also failed to qualify for the AFCON 2025 under his leadership, despite continued backing from the Ghana Football Association.

Speaking to Adom FM, Pappoe said the focus should now be on supporting the new coach rather than questioning the decision.

“We have limited time for the World Cup, and if you look at the options available and our resources, I believe we have to rally behind whoever has been appointed,” he said.

“We were all calling for an experienced and respected coach who can improve the team, and the Ghana Football Association together with the Sports Ministry has made their choice, so we must support him.”

Pappoe pointed to Queiroz’s experience on the global stage, noting that he has managed at four World Cups.

“He has been at the World Cup four times, and we don’t have to focus on the negatives, but rather support him,” he added.

Queiroz is expected to meet his squad next month when Ghana face Mexico in a friendly, before another warm-up match against Wales on 2 June.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, which will be hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.

Drawn in Group L, the Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on 17 June. They will then face England on 23 June and Croatia national football team on 27 June.

After disappointing performances at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, Ghana will be hoping for a stronger showing this time, with Queiroz tasked with rebuilding confidence and guiding the team to better results on football’s biggest stage.
