Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says former Black Stars coach Otto Addo did not achieve the progress expected by the Ghana Football Association, even though he was strongly supported.
Addo, who returned as coach in March 2024, was sacked after Ghana lost two friendly matches in a row against Austria and Germany during the March break.
He was also in charge when Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, although he had earlier helped the team qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on the KSM Show, Adams said the Ghana football association had shown patience but saw little improvement in results.
“They kept the coach and carried him along. They were expecting to see some improvement and changes, but not much has been seen,” he said.
He added that although the GFA believed in the coach’s plans, the team’s performances were not good enough, which led to the decision to make a change before the World Cup.
The GFA has now appointed experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal to lead the team to the tournament.
Queiroz is expected to start work immediately, focusing on checking players, forming his backroom staff and preparing the team.
He will first meet the squad next month for a friendly match against Mexico, followed by another game against Wales on 2 June.
Ghana will be playing in their fifth World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Black Stars are in Group L and will start against Panama on 17 June. They will then play England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June.
