Former Barcelona and Manchester United forward Memphis Depay has voiced his disappointment after observing the poor state of Asante Kotoko's training pitch during a surprise Boxing Day visit to the team's session at Adako Jachie.
Depay, a Dutch international with Ghanaian heritage, appeared visibly concerned about the condition of the playing surface, describing it as unsuitable for professional football. Addressing the players, he commended their efforts in adapting to the challenging conditions while promising to support improvements.
"You guys train on these types of pitches; I respect that. It’s not easy. The ball bounces too much, so it takes more time to control," Depay remarked. "But how can we resolve it? I’m brainstorming with everyone behind the scenes now that I’ve shown my face here, and I’ll do my best to help make things change."
This visit isn’t Depay’s first interaction with the club. During an earlier trip to Ghana, he met with Kotoko’s owner, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
On a positive note, Depay revealed plans to organize a friendly match between his current club, Brazilian giants Corinthians, and Asante Kotoko. While details of the fixture remain tentative, Depay expressed his excitement about the prospect.
"I am trying to arrange something for the team to maybe play a friendly game against my team in Brazil, Corinthians. I’ll discuss it with the coach. It’s in the plan," he said.
Depay’s visit has not only brought international attention to the challenges Kotoko faces but also sparked hope for a brighter future through potential collaborations and improved facilities.
