Former Black Stars midfielder Laryea Kingston believes Panama national team could prove Ghana’s most difficult opponent in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England national football team and Croatia national football team.
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17, before facing England in Boston on June 23 and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
While England and Croatia are seen as the biggest names in the group, Kingston believes Panama could pose a bigger challenge because they are less familiar to Ghana.
“We know our opponents very well, apart from Panama. I think we are very much aware of England,” he said. “A lot of people are writing off Panama, but for me, that’s the most important opponent.”
Kingston warned that underestimating the Central American side could be dangerous.
“We see England and Croatia over and over again, playing every week. But the Panama team are players that we are unaware of. They will be a thorn in our flesh. I know most people see them as the underdogs, but I think they will be the most difficult match.”
Despite the tough group, Kingston remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances.
“Ghana has a lot of respect in Africa; our mindset is not to just go and participate. We are expected to go out there and do well, and I believe we will at least make it out of the group.”
