Ghana's President, Nana Akufo Addo, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to spearhead efforts for the Black Stars to break the nation's 41-year Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy drought.
The President emphasized the importance of ending this lengthy wait during a meeting with the GFA leadership at the Jubilee House on Wednesday.
As Ghana prepares for the 34th edition of the AFCON in Ivory Coast, President Akufo Addo expressed optimism and acknowledged the high expectations surrounding the national team. With the last AFCON triumph dating back to 1982, the President urged the GFA to ensure the team's utmost dedication and performance in the upcoming tournament.
"It's been forty-one years since Ghana won the Africa Cup of Nations. If my memory serves me right, we have played in a couple of finals in recent times and lost on penalties in 2015. Expectations are very high, so let's do our best to make this tournament a success," he stressed.
Ghana, in Group B, is set to face Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in the group stage matches. The Black Stars will commence their AFCON campaign against Cape Verde at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on January 14, 2024, followed by encounters with Egypt and Mozambique. The tournament is scheduled to run from January 13 to February 11.
