Real Tamale United (RTU) finds itself at the center of a controversy in the Ghana Premier League after fielding unregistered players in their recent 8-1 defeat to Dreams FC.
The scandal has eclipsed the league's celebration of Samartex's first-time championship win and the intense relegation battle between Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics.
RTU's first team boycotted the match due to unpaid salaries, leading to the recruitment of players from lower division sides to fill the void. This move, orchestrated by RTU’s Chief Executive Zakaria Safianu, resulted in a humiliating loss and raised serious questions about the club's management.
Further adding to the uproar, the player credited with RTU’s only goal, Lord Adabo, was allegedly absent from the match altogether. This scandal has sparked widespread outrage, with fans and stakeholders expressing dismay over the tarnishing of the league's reputation.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is anticipated to take severe action against RTU, possibly including a lifetime ban from competitions. The timing of the scandal, overshadowing Samartex's historic victory and the critical relegation battle, has further exacerbated the situation.
The decision by RTU to field unregistered players has drawn criticism from all quarters, impacting the league's brand and credibility. As the league approaches its climax, the football community is left grappling with the fallout of RTU's actions.
All eyes are now on the GFA's response, as it will set a precedent for handling similar issues in the future.
