Berekum Chelsea say the arrest of a suspected gang leader and an accomplice over the killing of Dominic Frimpong is a “proactive step” police.

The club was reacting after confirmation that two suspects had been picked up in connection with the robbery attack on the team bus which led to the player’s death.

Police sources say the arrests followed an exchange of gunfire with officers. The alleged gang leader was injured during the gunbattle and later taken to hospital.

Authorities also say the suspect has admitted involvement in the attack.

Frimpong, 20, died from gunshot wounds after the incident on 12 April 2026 along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District.
The team had been travelling from Samreboi to Berekum when the bus was ambushed.

Speaking to Citi Sports, the club’s Public Relations Officer Isaac Obeng praised the response of the Ghana Police Service.

“We are waiting for the Ghana police to inform the club officially. But as I said earlier, we have trust in the Ghana Police, and we believe they will deliver on their promise. They have been very proactive. The arrest is good news for Berekum Chelsea and Ghana.”

The fatal attack sparked widespread outrage across the football community and renewed concerns about the safety of teams travelling for domestic competitions.

Police say investigations are ongoing as they work to track down other suspects believed to have been involved in the robbery.
