Spokesperson of the Ghana Football Association Henry Asante Twum has described the development of current Ghana men U-17 team as a good one and added the ultimate aim now is to qualify for the AFCON.
The Black Starlets last participation in the CAF U-17 Championship was in 2017 in Gabon- thus almost seven years ago, where the team made it to the final to book a spot at World Cup in India.
With this long-term abeyance, the GFA are putting in calculated efforts to make the team a force again under the tutelage of former Black Stars winger Laryea Kingston.
Currently, the two-time world champions are in Russia for an invitational four-nation tournament organized by UEFA, and lost to host nation Russia by 3-1 in their opening game yesterday.
They will take on Serbia and Kazakhstan in their subsequent matches to wrap up the competition.
Speaking in an interview on Citi TV, the renowned journalist highlighted mainly on how they scouted and groomed the current set of players and added they are hoping to achieve host and win in the upcoming WAFU Zone B Championship so they could make it to the next U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
"For this team, the majority of them come from the KGL under-17 with the championship we organised," he told Citi Sports.
"We did two club competitions, and later we organised the regional championship in Kumasi, we had coaches present to select some players, some of the players have already played in the Premier League, some from Legon City, some from Accra Lions, some from Great Olympics, and so I think the exposure, you know, they have began to gather it in bits.
"As we host the tournament, our ambition is that we host and win, then qualify for AFCON, because like you rightly said, we have not qualified since 2017 at the under-17.
"This time round, we won’t go a step further, so say we go qualify for Africa," he added.
Ghana in the WAFU tourney, are in Group A as the hosts alongside Benin and Cote D'Ivoire.
