The race to replace Otto Addo has reached a decisive phase, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council scheduled to meet on April 7 to appoint a new head coach for the Black Stars.

The high-stakes meeting comes at a crucial moment for Ghana, with just 65 days remaining before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With preparations already under pressure, the GFA faces growing urgency to chart a clear path forward.

Addo’s dismissal following the March international friendlies has left limited time for rebuilding, and many observers believe the decision came late, further tightening the timeline ahead of the global showpiece.

Three Frontrunners in the Spotlight

According to reports, three leading candidates have emerged as frontrunners for the role, although their identities have not been officially disclosed. The Executive Council is expected to assess these options and settle on a preferred candidate during the meeting.

Sports journalist Godfred Akoto Boafo indicates that the GFA is prioritizing a short-term appointment—someone capable of guiding the team through the World Cup with immediate impact.

Among the names strongly linked to the position is Hervé Renard, who remains a preferred choice despite currently managing Saudi Arabia. Another prominent contender is Paulo Bento, a vastly experienced tactician who has previously coached Portugal and South Korea and is reportedly among over 600 applicants for the job.

Okraku Sets the Standard

GFA President Kurt Okraku has outlined the key attributes expected of the next Black Stars coach, emphasizing experience, success, and leadership.

“Hopefully, this next one will be that one that will give everyone the confidence,” Okraku said.

“He should have a strong record at both club and national team level, be someone who has won trophies, and most importantly, bring belief and stability to the dressing room.”

World Cup Clock Ticking

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, leaving little room for extensive preparation. The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico, followed by a final test against Wales on June 2.

The April 7 Executive Council meeting is widely seen as a turning point, as the GFA aims to restore confidence and momentum within the squad ahead of one of the most important tournaments in the nation’s football history.
