Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku has expressed his joy after Ghana confirmed their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a narrow victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The four-time African champions secured a 1–0 win in their final Group I qualifier, with Mohammed Kudus scoring the decisive goal early in the second half. The result saw Ghana finish top of the group with 25 points from 10 matches, sealing automatic qualification for the tournament to be staged in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Although Opoku did not feature in the Comoros clash, the Istanbul Basaksehir defender played a crucial role throughout the qualifying campaign, making five appearances as Ghana booked their fifth World Cup berth.

Taking to social media after the game, the former Fulham and Arouca player shared his excitement, writing:

“Good morning! WC’26 see you soon. Premature formation.”

The 25-year-old centre-back, who made his Ghana debut in 2023, is expected to be part of Otto Addo’s final squad for the World Cup — which would mark his first major international tournament with the Black Stars.

Ghana will discover their group-stage opponents when the official World Cup draw is held in Washington, D.C., on December 5, 2025.
