President of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama and his vice Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, met with the Black Queens last Tuesday after their impressive WAFCON campaign and has assured them of the entire nation’s support to reach the highest echelon of their game
Ghana returned to the continental showpiece for the first time since 2018 but managed to clinch bronze in the end despite a sloppy start to the tournament
After a 2-0 loss to South Africa and giving away a goal-lead to draw 1-1 against Mali, the Black Queens won 4-1 in their final group game over Tanzania to punch their ticket to the knockout phase
Kim Lars Bjorkegren and his girls took out Algeria via penalty shootouts next but lost painfully to host Morocco in the semi-final before edging out South Africa finally in the third-place playoff
The players and the technical team were giving a heroes welcome by Ghanaians and were celebrated at Ghana’s Parliament where they received a Ghc100,000 cash reward from the minority group
They headed to the Jubilee House next, accompanied by GFA boss Kurt Okraku, to meet the President who congratulated them for their performance and urged them to continue working hard as they have all got better days ahead. He also donated an undisclosed amount to the team
“All is not lost yet, your best days are still ahead of you, there are many other games to play, and I am sure that this is an experience that you will take as part of the conditioning to rise to higher heights, and so we are all going to support you," he said.
The Black Queens will now go on to enjoy their holidays with many preparing to join their various clubs for preseason ahead of the 2025/26 football season
