Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton after the defeat against Mexico, has quickly shifted his attention to the game against USA next week, hoping for an improved performance this time around.
Chris Hughton, the head coach of Ghana, remains hopeful about his team's performance as they look ahead to their second friendly match against the United States of America at the GEODIS Park Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
This optimism follows the Black Stars' recent 2-0 loss to Mexico's El Tri at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, USA.
These recent outcomes underscore Ghana's struggles, as they have been unable to secure a victory in four attempts against the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup Champions. The purpose of these friendly matches against Mexico and the USA is to prepare the team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers starting in November and the Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for January next year.
During a post-match press conference, Hughton reiterated his expectations for the upcoming friendly against the USA, emphasizing the need for an improved performance.
"The message to the players remains the same. We don't want to leave this international camp with two poor results," he stated.
Hughton stressed the team's aim for a better outcome in the second game to avoid departing the international camp with two disappointing results.
"If we can get the right reaction, which I am confident we will, it increases the chances of delivering a performance that can yield something positive in the second game against the USA."
Learning from their shortcomings in the first match against Mexico is essential for achieving a favorable result against the USA.
"Our focus is on learning from the areas where we fell short in the first match against Mexico."
The last encounter between Ghana and the USA in an international friendly took place in July 2017, resulting in a 2-1 loss for Ghana at the Pratt and Whitney Stadium in East Hartford.
Ghana coach Chris Hughton has attributed the Black Stars' defeat to the Tricolors of Mexico in Saturday's international friendly to the North Americans familiarity with the Bank of America Stadium pitch in Charlotte, USA.
Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars, acknowledged the challenges his team faced in dealing with Mexico's increased intensity in the second half, which resulted in their 2-0 defeat in an international friendly at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, USA, ending Hughton's unbeaten run with the Black Stars.
During the post-match press conference, Hughton expressed his satisfaction with the team's first-half performance but noted the need for more goal-scoring opportunities.
“Certainly, in the first half period I came in not too unhappy, you know. I felt we could have perhaps produced a little bit more in the final third; a few more goal scoring opportunities”
“The problem was in the second half where the Mexican team upped the tempo of their game”
However, he highlighted the difficulty they encountered in the second half when Mexico elevated their game's tempo. He emphasized Mexico's quality and their ability to press effectively, which posed challenges for his team.
“You know they're a very good side and they press well; they have very sharp players and we struggled to cope with the intensity of their game in in that second half period.”
Hirving Lozano of PSV broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, exploiting Ghana's defensive vulnerabilities, and later, in the 72nd minute, Uriel Antuna of Dynamo Moscow extended Mexico's lead by capitalizing on a well-placed through ball that pierced Ghana's defense.
Ghana's next match is against the United States, scheduled for Wednesday dawn at 12:30 A.M. at the Geodis Park in Tennessee.
Hirvin Lonzano and Uriel Antuna scored to hand the Tricolors a convincing victory over the Black Stars. Heading into the game, the Mexican had not lost in their last five games and had scored 11 and conceded.
