Just because a club is struggling for survival doesn't mean it lacks prize footballing assets. In fact, several teams stuck in the mire have players who could easily play a part for the very best in the division—some from a starting role, others perhaps in a more rotational one.
There are three clubs who you can argue are in the mix: RTU, Techiman Eleven Wonders, and WAFA are under severe pressure to get points on the board in their quest for survival. The further down you go, the more desperate the need is.
In building this list, we had to omit some excellent players who have serious cases to be on here. It speaks to the top-down quality of the league that there were so many, another list of 11 could easily be constructed.
Here, we've built a list of 10 such individuals.
Sadat Mohammed (Midfielder, RTU)
Competent at controlling the game from deep or bursting forward into more advanced positions, Mohammed continues to blossom in the RTU jersey despite his club’s downward spiral.
With his reading of the game, reliability in possession and ability to resist an opposition press still up there with the very best in the division.
Then there's his passing. Outside of the foot, inside of the foot, short or long, it really doesn't matter. You know as soon as the ball leaves his foot it's finding its intended target.
Perry Addison Rockson (Left-Back, Techiman Eleven Wonders)
Probably the least known on the list, but certainly not the least talented. Rockson has been outstanding for his club this campaign.
At just 19, the full-back has earned plaudits for his speed, technical qualities and ability to make a tackle. In other words, he’s all you could ever want in a left-back.
Blessed with lightening pace and lovely close control, the teenager is a real swashbuckling full-back capable of driving deep into opposition territory with the ball at his feet.
John Tedeku (Left-back, WAFA)
Intelligence has become a key feature of Tedeku's forward-thinking game, knowing exactly when to hold his position and when to make lung-bursting 50-yard dash into the final third.
This has helped him become a mainstay in a listless WAFA side. Defensively, he remains an awesome proposition, one that all managers would love to have in their team.
Solid, dependable, positionally he is excellent, always the correct distance from his colleagues and opponent.
Konadu Yiadom (Centre-back, WAFA)
He is very strong, good in the air and thrives on closely man- marking the opponent and using his reading of the game to outwit opposing attackers, but he also knows when to get stuck in, also adept to using his body to shield the ball away from danger and also make powerful recovery when required.
He never allows his opponents an easy passage to meander into the space surrounding him, and wreak havoc. However, when they did obtain possession in close proximity to him, he pounces like a hungry lion to bring the pressure.
Ibrahim Laar (Forward, Techiman Eleven Wonders)
Tenacious, commanding and relentless both in possession and off it, it's those traits that has made him one of the finest forwards in the league.
He stretches defences with his tireless running and movement. Though he still misses a lot of chances, Laar has worked very hard to get into great positions and has ensured that he improves his efficiency in front of goal, which can be seen from his goalscoring record.
Baba Kushibo (Right-back, RTU)
With versatility in abundance due to the various roles he's played in his previous clubs, all that experience has weaved together to form the perfect package; the perfect amalgamation of mental, technical, and physical attributes.
Able to control the tempo of matches, dig his heels in and attack when required, and also provide the eye-of-the-needle pass forward that starts (or finishes) an attack.
Ronald Frimpong ( Forward, RTU)
The RTU forward is like that one firework at New Year’s Eve that continues to pop off even after you think it’s ran its course. At any given moment, he can shoot off to the left, to the right, or down the middle, with a frightening pace and an air of unpredictability that makes him such a joy to watch.
Whether it’s beating his man, finding the pockets of space, linking up with teammates from wide areas, or caressing the ball into the far corner, he can do the lot.
David Abagna Sandan ( Midfielder, RTU)
His selfless attitude and ability to move around the pitch have seen him become one of the most sought-after midfielders in the league. His injury at the Black Stars camp really halted the progress of RTU.
His ability to disrupt the play and launch attacks has become a feature of the RTU side. Sandan's nimble frame perhaps lures opponents into a false sense of security; the truth is he was one of the most intelligent midfielders you are likely to see in the Ghanaian topflight.
Unlike many others in his position, Sandan also boasts a keen eye for goal. Plenty of them are screamers, too.
The midfielder can do pretty much everything: pass long, pass short, shoot from way out, shoot from close in, he is strong, can keep the ball, and has vision.
Osei Yaw (Goalkeeper, RTU)
Most of RTU's first XI are getting the praise they deserve this season, but few are talking about just how big an impact Osei Yaw has had on the side. The goalkeeper has made saves, punches and made errors that have led to goals whilst inducing a sense of calm in his defence.
His dependability was highlighted in his club’s games when he picked up an injury. One of the safest pair of hands in the division. His major strength is his ability to be in the right position in order to cover a large portion of the goal especially when opposing forwards are bearing down on goal. Another strength of his is his distribution.
Michael Zuo (Midfielder, WAFA)
Zuo is a great young player who has taken the Ghanaian top-flight league by storm this season becoming an integral member of the new-look WAFA side.
At 17, he has shone thanks to impressive displays of pace and skill; his quick feet and ability to change pace with little warning make him an asset in attack, and he provides a serious threat in the goal at that.
His control is top-notch and he is willing to confront defenders and opposing midfielders with a tenacity, calmness, and vision well beyond his years and experience level.
Couple that with deadly finishing capabilities and you've got the makings of a teenage sensation who will make headlines in years to come.
