Abdulai Gazale has borne the brunt of the fans' frustrations for an uninspired showing against Tamale City FC and, unless a genuine miracle occurs between now and the end of the season, the caretaker manager will surely be yet another coach condemned to the scrapheap.
But any resurrection of this side must go deeper than the managerial fall–guy. Too many players are overpaid and underperforming, and the new boss—whoever that may be—will need to reconstruct a squad to challenge at home and abroad.
That will mean faces leaving, as well as entering, but with plenty of deadwood already on the roster, why wait until it's too late to make the cull?
I take a look at four players that Kotoko should look to offload sooner rather than later.
Dickson Afoakwa
More well-known for his ‘Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’ looks that his on-field ability, we’re more used to seeing the 24-year-old gurn on camera that contribute on the pitch, with most Kotoko supporters losing patience with the player. The wide man has done little to convince the Kotoko faithful that he is truly worthy of retaining the famous red jersey.
Questions about his mental attitude have been asked on more than one occasion, but there appears to be no significant improvement in his overall game.
Charles Owusu
Owusu arrived with the promise of being Kotoko’s left-back for the next decade, at least. The former BA United defender was playing exceptional football in the season prior to Kotoko buying him, and there was genuine excitement over this signing.
But with poor performances, a lackadaisical approach to training and continuous injuries, Owusu has failed to cement a place in the first-team, especially in the second half of this season and has lost out to John Tedeku and Nicholas Osei Bonsu.
Solomon Sarfo Taylor
Since arriving in Kumasi after brief spell abroad, Taylor has been disappointing. He might have started well and in a positive fashion, but since then, the former Karela United FC man has been a stuttering mess in attack.
It appears that Taylor has just not adapted well enough to life at Kotoko. At times, he has looked like he was going to kick on and prove the player he was at Karela, but then an injury my occur or his performance just drastically drops.
Taylor is likely to leave Kotoko at the end of the season.
Moise Pouaty
The Cameroonian goalkeeper has found it extremely difficult dislodging Frederick Asare and Danlad Ibrahim for Kotoko’s number one and is unlikely he can become number one anytime soon.
It'll be beneficial for both parties if his contract was just terminated early and replace him with a young Ghanaian goalkeeper to understudy Ibrahim and Asare.
