Former AshantiGold and Asante Kotoko defender Richard Osei Agyemang has joined the chorus of concerns over the exodus of players from the Ghana Premier League.
The 29-year-old, who left Ghana for India and Nepal in 2023, believes that low wages are the primary reason why top players are abandoning the league.
In an interview with Kessben FM, Osei Agyemang predicted that amateur players will soon take over the league due to the lack of attractive salaries. He argued that there is no player in the Ghana Premier League who is financially secured.
"There is no local player who is rich. There is no one, I tell you. I dare anyone to come out. If players earn good money they will stay in the league. Salaries given to players in the local scene are nothing to write home about. If a local player earns GHC10,000, I don't think that player will move outside. We have to fight for the boys so they can also get something. Very soon, we will see amateur players playing in the league," he said.
Osei Agyemang's comments highlight the struggle many Ghanaian players face in terms of securing decent salaries in their domestic league.
The situation has led to a mass exodus of talented players leaving Ghana for foreign leagues with better pay and conditions.
